Short answer: Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) means writing your website so that a search engine or AI assistant can lift a clear, accurate answer straight from your page. For therapy practices that means question-led pages, short answer-first paragraphs, FAQ markup and wording that stays factual and within professional rules.
What is AEO and why does it matter for therapy practices?
People increasingly type full questions into Google or ask an AI assistant: “What happens in a first session of body-oriented psychotherapy?” or “How is a session billed in Germany?”. Answer engines look for pages that answer such questions directly and clearly. If your page does, it can be quoted in a featured snippet, an AI Overview or an assistant’s answer, often with a link back to you.
AEO overlaps with SEO and GEO. SEO helps you rank, GEO helps AI systems understand your whole practice, and AEO focuses on the individual question-and-answer units on your pages.
Step 1: Collect the questions clients really ask
Start with first-contact emails, phone calls and what clients say in the first session. Group them by theme:
- Method: what is it, how does it differ from talk therapy, what do sessions involve?
- Practical: duration, frequency, cost, billing, cancellation, online options, languages.
- Fit: who it may suit, when another form of support is more appropriate.
- Privacy: how confidentiality and data are handled.
Step 2: Write answer-first
Place the answer in the first one or two sentences under each question heading. Then add context. A good pattern is: direct answer, short explanation, optional example, link to the next step.
Example: “How long is a session? A standard session lasts 50 minutes. The first appointment is used to talk about your concerns and decide together whether and how we work.” (Adapt to your actual practice.)
Step 3: Use a clear question-and-answer structure
Use the question as an H2 or H3 heading and keep answers between 40 and 80 words where possible. Avoid burying answers in long, general introductions. Use short lists for steps or options so assistants can extract them cleanly.
Step 4: Add FAQ schema
FAQPage structured data marks up your questions and answers so search systems can read them unambiguously. Only mark up questions that are visible on the page, and keep the schema text identical to what readers see.
Step 5: Keep wording factual and compliant
Therapy content touches health. In Germany, the Heilmittelwerbegesetz (HWG) and professional codes limit promises and comparisons. Do not claim cures or guaranteed outcomes, do not give individual diagnoses on a website and point people to appropriate help in crises. Have important pages checked against the rules that apply to you.
Step 6: Link answers to deeper pages
Each answer should lead somewhere useful: the method page, the page about your practitioners or the contact page. Descriptive internal links help search systems understand how your content fits together.
Common AEO mistakes in therapy websites
- Vague marketing language that never actually answers the question.
- One long page covering every method, so no single answer is clear.
- FAQ text hidden in accordions that load slowly or are blocked from crawling.
- Schema that does not match the visible text.
- Outdated prices, opening hours or session formats.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO focuses on giving direct answers to individual questions on your pages. GEO focuses on making your whole practice and its entities understandable to AI systems. They work best together.
Will AEO guarantee a featured snippet?
No. Search systems choose their sources themselves. AEO improves the chance that your content is suitable to be quoted.
How many questions should a page answer?
Quality matters more than quantity. Four to eight well-answered questions per page is a sensible range for most method pages.
